Experience in Educational Reform, Review, and Accreditation

Dr. Sarhan has been extensively involved in internal and international educational reform, review, and accreditation activities. He served as an external expert for reforming computer science and computer engineering programs and courses. He also served as a chair or member of sixteen panels for review and accreditation of institutions and undergraduate and graduate programs, including electrical and computer engineering, software engineering, computer and network engineering, and electrical engineering.

Dr. Sarhan teaches/taught a variety of courses in computer engineering, including Scalable and Secure Internet Services and Architectures, Special Topics on Multimedia, Special Topics on Multimedia Networking, Special Topics on Multimedia Systems and Networks, Computer Networks and Programming, Computer Architecture, Data Structures and Algorithms, Microcomputer Systems and Programming, Computer Programming for Engineers, and Algorithmic Processes.

Dr. Sarhan has recently led the college efforts to develop the College of Engineering MS. Degree Program in Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Dr. Sarhan is the recipient of the Wayne State University President's Award for Excellence in Teaching and the College of Engineering Excellence in Teaching Award.

Dr. Sarhan has been inducted into the WSU Academy of Teachers (2022).

Major Internal Service:

  • Leading the college efforts to develop the College of Engineering MS. Degree Program in Artificial Intelligence (AI), 2021 - 2022
  • Serving as the Chair of the Computer Engineering Area Committee, which made significant improvements in the computer engineering curricula at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
  • Serving as the Chair of the ECE taskforce for the development of the ECE Master’s Degree Program in Artificial Intelligence.
  • Served as the Graduate Program Director of the Electrical and Computer Engineering. During this service, I made the following contributions: (i) developing a new graduate curriculum for the M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering, (ii) developing several new policies regarding admission, plagiarism, overrides, grade performance requirements, form submission, Ph.D. prerequisite requirements, and Ph.D. Prelim Exam, and (iii) substantially revising almost all graduate forms,the graduate handbook, the graduate website, and all other documentation.
  • Led the Computer Engineering Taskforce, which made significant changes to
    • The Computer Option of the B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering
    • The Ph.D. Preliminary Examination requirements and outline for Computer Engineering, including adding a new area
  • Developed a research-oriented graduate course on multimedia computing and networking.
  • Transformed the senior-level computer architecture course into a research and design oriented course with built-in labs.
  • Transformed the computer networking course into a project-oriented course with built-in labs.
  • Enhanced the curriculum of the advanced computer architecture course to reflect the new design trends and challenges.
  • Enhanced the Scalable and Secure Internet Service and Architectures course into to reflect the new design trends and challenges.

Outreach Activities:

  • Made a School Presentation, “Demystifying Artificial Intelligence for Kids: How to teach computers how to do things?”, STEM Night, IIA School, Detroit, MI, Sept. 26, 2019.
  • Organized numerous outreach activities to high schools’ students and teachers.
  • Served as the Faculty Counselor of the IEEE Wayne State University Student Branch, which got recognized nationally and regionally for its activities.
