News: Dr. Nabil Sarhan served as the Expert Witness and Consulting Expert on the plaintiff’s side in the patent infringement case VideoShare v. Google, the plaintiff won $25.9 Million.

Dr. Sarhan has served as an Expert Witness or Consulting Expert in numerous patent infringement cases related to methods, systems, software, websites, and mobile apps for video streaming, video sharing, video storage, video delivery, and video recording, involving major cellular networks, mobile operating systems makes, smartphone manufacturers, media streaming, and social media companies. He has also served as a Consulting Expert in other intellectual property and corporate litigation cases related to secure multimedia products for medical applications, encryption, anonymity, and IP addresses.

Technical Experience:

Dr. Sarhan is an internationally recognized expert in video streaming, multimedia systems, online video, computer vision systems, computer networking, and automated video surveillance, with over 20 years of experience in the field. Three of his research projects were sponsored by the National Science Foundation, one by Silicon Mechanics, and one by Sun Microsystems.

Dr. Sarhan served as the Chair of the Interest Group on Media Streaming of the IEEE Multimedia Communication Technical Committee and the Co-Director of the IEEE Multimedia Communication Technical Committee Review Board. He also served as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology. He has been involved in the organization of numerous international conferences in various capacities, including chair, co-chair, publicity chair, track chair, and technical program committee number. For example, he served as Co-Chair of the Technical Program Committee of ACM SIGMM Workshop on Network and Operating Systems Support for Digital Audio and Video (NOSSDAV) in 2018.

Dr. Sarhan authored over 50 peer-reviewed or invited journal, magazine, and conference papers on numerous topics, including video streaming, multimedia systems, automated video surveillance, computer system design, computer networks, and deep learning, with publications in top venues. He was also the editor or co-editor of a conference proceeding, a special issue in the Multimedia Tools and Applications Journal, a special issue in the IEEE MMTC E-letter, and multiple IEEE MMTC R-Letters. He published a book chapter: “Streaming Multimedia”, The Handbook of Computer Networks, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., November 2007. He is the named inventor on U.S. Patent No. 9,313,463 related to the design of automated video surveillance systems.

Dr. Sarhan regularly teaches courses on computer architecture, computer networking, and secure and scalable Internet services and architectures. He also taught three advanced courses on multimedia systems and networking as well as courses on data structures and algorithms, C++ programming, microcomputer systems, and algorithmic processes.

Dr. Sarhan supervised seven Ph.D. dissertations and four master theses and is currently supervising three Ph.D. students.

Dr. Sarhan is the recipient of the IEEE SEM Outstanding Professional of the Year Award, the Wayne State University President's Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the College of Engineering Excellence in Teaching Award. Dr. Sarhan is a Senior Member of the IEEE.
